Conclusion

The proposed classification underscores the role of hemp in promoting environmental sustainability. By facilitating the selection of hemp varieties optimised for specific environmental conditions, the classification system can contribute to more sustainable land use, reduced water consumption, and lower inputs of fertilisers and pesticides. The ability to choose hemp varieties with enhanced stress resistance and WUE can also mitigate the impact of agriculture on natural resources, supporting the transition towards more sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.

This paper has discussed the reasons and needs for setting out a new classification for industrial hemp varieties. The insights gained from this paper will assist hemp breeders worldwide in refocusing their breeding programs towards environmental and agronomical factors and a more accurate end use, given the multipurpose capability of the species. Future studies should assess the potential of new breed varieties for different agronomic traits with precision agriculture methods to increase sustainability and facilitate the adaption into current farming systems.”
