Cannabis R&D Pipeline

Here is the Jazz Pharmaceuticals (owner of GW Pharmaceuticals and the cannabis products Epidiolex and Sativex) R&D pipeline, per the company:

“Key Recent Patent and Clinical Updates:

Dravet Syndrome & Epilepsy Treatment (Late 2023): Jazz was granted a patent for the use of high-purity (at least 98%) CBD in treating treatment-resistant epilepsy (TRE), specifically for Dravet syndrome, and febrile infection-related epilepsy syndrome (FIRES).

CBD with Minor Cannabinoids (April 2024): A patent was granted for a CBD preparation containing at least 90% CBD and specific ratios of THC (0.7:1.0 to 5.0:1.0), which claims to provide a synergistic effect in treating Lennox Gastaut syndrome, Dravet syndrome, or tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).

Brain Injury Related Seizures (Dec 2023): A patent was filed for the use of CBD in treating seizures associated with Hypoxic-Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE) or anoxia at birth.

Herpes Simplex Virus Seizures (March 2024): A patent application was filed for using high-concentration CBD (>95% w/w) to treat seizures linked to herpes simplex virus.

Cannabidivarin (CBDV) Patent (August 2024): A patent was granted for the use of CBDV and combinations for treating epilepsy.

Manufacturing Investment: In 2023, Jazz announced a $100 million investment in a 60,000-square-foot facility to increase manufacturing capabilities for its cannabis-based medicines.

Legal Disputes:

Jazz has been actively defending its patent portfolio, having initiated lawsuits against generic drugmakers (such as Alkem, Apotex, and Teva) that sought to market generic versions of Epidiolex. In early 2024, courts upheld that Jazz did not lie regarding its “small entity” status in patent filings.

Other Developments:

Health Canada Approval: In Nov 2023, Health Canada approved Epidiolex as an adjunct therapy for seizures in patients two years and older with LGS, Dravet syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex.

International Trials: Jazz is conducting Phase III trials in Japan for Epidiolex in treatment-resistant epilepsies.

Sativex: Despite some trial setbacks, Jazz continues to develop nabiximols (Sativex), a cannabis-derived spray for MS spasticity.”
