RIP Richard Lee

Most know him for his horticultural work, emphasis on cultural, but I also remember that ~30 years ago he published a hemp newspaper, with news and education.

He was an inspiration for many. As I wrote in “Seedy!” (2024):

Those on the Spectrum, disabled, or managing their condition all can still find or create jobs for themselves. One of the early Cannabis entrepreneurs in Oakland, CA (“Oaksterdam”) was Richard Lee, and he ran his empire from a wheelchair. Those unemployable for whatever reason are some of the most passionate entrepreneurs. Leverage our neurodiversity like so many before, or at least just be nice.

From old friend Etienne Fontan:

We lost another legend. I’m gutted.

Richard Lee was a true pioneer, founder of Oaksterdam University, cannabis freedom fighter, and a generous soul who quietly changed the world.

After my divorce, he gave me one of my first jobs back in the Bay. He hired me to clean out an abandoned restaurant that would later become The Bulldog. I also tended his gardens in the early days of Oaksterdam and even taught a few classes there, small things with significant meaning.

Richard loved music, cannabis, and people. He believed in second chances and made space for everyone in the movement.

He never needed the spotlight; he was the light.

Thank you for everything, Richard Lee.

Love forever.

Rest in power. 💚
